The movie Minority Report shows a futuristic world where crimes and criminals don’t exist. The perfect utopian world set in the year of 2054 A.D. where harm is clearly a disturbance. The way everything is protected and secured is by 3 genetically altered humans called the “Precogs” with special powers that allow them to see the future and predict any crimes beforehand. The issue with the development of such a futuristic utopian world is that privacy will no longer be. To be able to see into the future and out of the ordinary just predict a regular innocent person to be suspect of a crime is totally absurd. Society would be in total chaos all the time and would cause a disturbance, especially to those who are accuse a suspect of a crime they haven’t even committed. It would definitely be a crucial change in society.
In a world like this would in my opinion be a dystopian world and totally a horrible state of regression. We as humans have our own right to do anything we wish and say anything we want according to the first amendments of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Privacy in my opinion is very important and to have that taken away is just preposterous. There are many personal things us humans need and have to do such as sex, urinate, shower, etc. I do believe that there is an extent to privacy such as murdering, crimes and that’s where we need to be secured. There is so many other ways to do that other than the utopian ideal to just be able to predict and accuse people for doing something they haven’t done.
A specific way would be to have more security on every avenue, more cameras, detectives, patrolmen to patrol areas in the night. As much as people don’t like the idea, it is definitely the right thing to do and it’ll build better and safer communities. The system is not always perfect but what is perfect in life? We were just created that way and everything and everyone are equal so there shouldn’t be a reason why the system should be different. The idea of a utopian world just doesn’t appeal to me and just isn’t such a wonderful idea. If I would have to choose between 2 worlds, one where everything is secured how it is in the movie, and the other which is how it is realistically, I would choose the realistically way.
In this world crime still exists as well as criminals. Only murders and killings have been eliminated in Washington D.C. it was still not a national or global system as the movie stated when Colin Farrell’s character was told in his interview in the beginning of the movie. Also the pre cogs could only foresee 187’s (the police code for murder, death, kill.) their powers are also a birth defect due to the fact that the mothers of these pre cogs were junkies.
ReplyDeleteWhat I did find original about your essay is the way you’re suggesting that the police should increase the show of force as they are doing today. Good work with that observation. It is also true what you said, about how a utopia could never work. We as human beings have the human condition. We love to have our buttons pushed sometimes, and we need pain. It keeps us in line and reminds us were still alive.
your blog sounds enthusiastic. Don't you think we already have too many cameras?
