Blog 2: The allegory of the cave

Plato uses the Allegory of the cave to view situations in life where people live in an illusion and remain in pure ignorance. In the early 1500's there was a belief that the earth was in fact flat. Lactantius and Cosmas were the first people to actually theorize the idea that the earth was flat. The theory of the earth being flat lead to the fear that if Christopher Columbus were to sail across the land he would fall off the face of the earth. Fully being aware of the idea he achieved his fear and sailed across the land with no problem. In fact before he set sail he'd  measure the distance he would travel just to make sure he really doesn't "fall off " the face of the earth.

The Christians were most of the believers and their beliefs were unbelievable such as "to the ends of the earth", "the four corners of the world" or "the sun sank into the sea".They in fact thought that they were living in an illusion that the world was flat. Living with such ignorance was  the only thing they can do. It wasnt until during the Cold war where the U.S had a conflict with the Soviet union on who would get the first man to land on the moon. In July 20, 1969 was when the first man on the moon took pictures of Earth and then had actual proof that the world was in fact SPHERICAL.

Lets just say the Earth was flat. There would be many problems with that such as traveling, trading worldwidely, there wouldnt even be no such things as airplanes because if they were to pass a certain point of the earth it would ''fall''.The Christian believers would have never thought of that because they never had a opportunity to see for theirselves and so they just stayed in pure ignorance.

The flat earth theory relates very much to how Plato uses the allegory of the cave to view the situations in life where people live in an illusion. The idea that the earth was just created by shadows is just as insane that the earth was a big flat surface. The believers were obviously in ignorance and the only way to find out something is to go check for yourself.

Blog 1: The cave and I

If I were to be living in a cave my whole life I would definitely want to see what the outside world is like. Even though I would have ignorance about what the outside world is. The shadows and the echo’s the two people from Plato hear in the story is definitely something I would want to explore. Just the fact knowing that there is another life would be very interesting because you never know if the life out there is better or worse. The only thing you can do is imagine it. Sacrates and Glaucon for example in the story were just so curious about what the outside world is like and since they were prisoners they didn’t have a chance to explore out there. The only thing they were able to do was hear objects and see shadows moving. They thought the only thing that was able to see is shadows because they never had the chance to see actual humans or any life out in the world. A great fear of living in a cave and exploring out in the world is that since the naked eye has never reveled any kind of light the sight would be really terrible but the only thing to do is take the risk and continue.

Hello my name is Kevin. I was born 11/28/92 so that makes me 18 years of age.One of my favorite sports is soccer. When i was younger i used to be in a soccer team. I was in the team for 3 years, I would have gone longer but then my couch passed away. So i became uninterested in joining any other team because the team i had before was like becoming family to me. One of my favorite national teams i like to root for is called ''National" which is a team in Colombia. Even though soccer interests me very much i choose not to become a soccer player in the future but my family says otherwise. What also interests me very much is flying. My dream is to visit every country in south america and see how the lifestyle is like in each and every one of them. I have visited so far Ecuador and Colombia. Both countries are beautiful and they have obviously the same language but totally different lifestyle.
